On a quiet summer morning, the lawn reveals its true character. Dew rests on the blades. Clover rises among the finer grasses. A blackbird searches for worms, while beneath the surface the roots hold the soil together. And then, from the shed, comes the mower.
For generations, this ritual began with the cough and roar of a petrol engine. Today, an altogether quieter hunter enters the scene: the battery-powered lawnmower. It moves without fuel, without an exhaust plume and, in many cases, with little more than the soft whir of an electric motor.
Yet choosing one is not simply a matter of selecting the brightest colour or the largest battery. Voltage, amp-hours, cutting width, blade design, drive system and the nature of the lawn itself all play their part. The right mower should match the garden as naturally as a wren matches a hedgerow.
What do lawnmower voltages mean?
Voltage describes the electrical potential supplied by the battery. In practical terms, it is one of the factors that helps determine how much power a mower can deliver to its motor. Battery capacity is measured in amp-hours, or Ah. To estimate the energy stored in a battery, voltage and amp-hours can be multiplied together.
A 40V battery rated at 5Ah contains approximately 200 watt-hours of energy. A 56V battery of the same 5Ah capacity contains around 280 watt-hours. This does not mean the 56V mower will always run for 40 per cent longer, because efficiency, blade speed, grass length, cutting width, terrain and driving assistance all affect performance. It does mean that higher-voltage platforms are generally better suited to demanding cutting.
The lowest-voltage lawnmowers, commonly around 18V or 20V, are often designed for small lawns or are part of a wider hand-tool battery system. They can be light and convenient, but they may struggle when faced with wet grass, long growth or a large collection bag full of clippings.
Around 24V to 36V, the machines become more capable. These systems are often appropriate for compact urban gardens, front lawns and modest back gardens where the grass is cut regularly. Their lighter batteries can make the mower easier to manoeuvre, particularly around borders, trees and garden furniture.
The 40V to 48V class is a useful middle ground. It provides enough power for many ordinary family gardens while keeping weight and cost within sensible limits. A 40V or 48V model can be a practical choice for a lawn that is neither tiny nor extensive, provided it is maintained regularly.

Higher voltage can help the system run efficiently, especially when spinning a wide blade through dense or damp grass. It also supports larger motors and longer blades, which are valuable when cutting substantial areas.
The important lesson is this: do not compare voltage in isolation. A 36V mower with a large battery may offer more useful working time than a 56V mower with a small one. Look at the complete system: voltage multiplied by amp-hours, the manufacturer’s claimed runtime, the cutting width and whether the mower is push or self-propelled.
How long do commercial batteries last on a single charge?
When manufacturers speak of battery runtime, they usually describe ideal or favourable conditions. A mower cutting short, dry grass on level ground will consume far less energy than one travelling uphill through wet, overgrown turf with the collection bag attached.
For a well-designed domestic battery mower, 30 to 60 minutes of actual cutting is a sensible broad expectation. Independent testing has found average runtimes around 45 to 50 minutes, with some machines exceeding 70 minutes under suitable conditions.
Commercial-grade equipment may offer longer working times through larger battery packs, dual-battery slots or interchangeable batteries, but “commercial” does not mean infinite. A professional contractor may carry several charged batteries and rotate them throughout the day.
A 4Ah battery may be enough for a small lawn, particularly when used with a narrow 36V or 40V mower. A 5Ah battery is a useful general-purpose size. Batteries of 6Ah, 7.5Ah or 8Ah are more appropriate for larger lawns, heavy grass or machines with self-propulsion. The attraction is practical: batteries can be moved between mowers, trimmers, blowers and other equipment, provided they belong to the same voltage and platform family.
Which battery and mower size suits a UK garden?
Garden size is best judged by the actual area of grass rather than the total plot. A garden may be large but contain borders, paving and planting beds, leaving only a small lawn to cut.
For a lawn up to approximately 100 square metres, a light push mower with a 30cm (12") to 38cm (15") cutting width is usually sufficient. A 24V, 36V or 40V machine with a 2.5Ah to 4Ah battery should cope comfortably if the grass is cut every week or two. Its smaller deck will also be easier to steer through narrow passages.
Between roughly 100 and 250 square metres, consider a 36V, 40V or 48V mower with a 38cm (15") to 46cm (18") deck and a 4Ah or 5Ah battery. This is the territory occupied by many typical British suburban gardens. The ideal machine will be light enough to turn easily but powerful enough to cope with spring growth and occasional dampness.
From 250 to 500 square metres, a 46cm(18") to 53cm (21) mower becomes increasingly attractive. A 48V, 56V or 60V platform with a 5Ah to 7.5Ah battery should provide a comfortable margin, particularly if the lawn is thick or uneven. Self-propulsion is worth considering if the garden slopes or the mower itself is heavy.
For lawns beyond 500 square metres, the calculation becomes more individual. A high-voltage mower with a large battery, rapid charger and a spare battery may be the most convenient walk-behind arrangement. Professional users and owners of very large lawns may prefer a commercial platform, a dual-battery mower or even a battery ride-on model.

The most effective way to create strong stripes is to use a mower with a rear roller. The roller presses the grass after the blade has passed, giving a more pronounced and consistent pattern. Rotary or cylinder: which is better for British lawns?
A rotary mower uses a horizontal blade that spins at high speed. It is the familiar design found in most homes. The blade cuts grass as it passes beneath the deck, and the airflow helps lift clippings into the collection box.
A cylinder mower uses a rotating cylinder of blades working against a fixed bottom blade. Rather than tearing through the grass, it makes a scissor-like cut. When properly adjusted and sharp, a cylinder mower can produce an exceptionally clean finish.
For a formal bowling-green-style lawn, a cylinder mower is difficult to beat. It is suited to fine grasses, short cutting heights and level ground. It rewards regular mowing, careful feeding, good drainage and frequent blade maintenance. It is, in effect, a specialist instrument.
Most British domestic lawns, however, are mixed communities. Ryegrass, fescue, meadow grass, moss and clover may all occupy the same few square metres. The ground may be uneven, the soil heavy and the weather persistently damp. In these conditions, the rotary mower is usually the better choice.
Rotary machines cope more easily with longer grass, rough patches, leaves and occasional neglect. They generally offer greater cutting-height adjustment and are available in a wider range of battery formats.
